'A Suitable Girl' (2017) is a documentary that follows the trials and tribulations of three young girls and their families as they search for the ideal grooms. The camerawork is suitably unobtrusive and yet we get telling insights into the lives, aspirations and fears of the young women, their parents and the scores of matchmakers, priests and "benevolent" elders that participate in the giant Indian wedding obsession. The film manages to make the absurdity of some situations laugh out loud and solidly depressing at once. Clean editing helps maintain interest and bring home how the pressure to conform to social roles can wreak havoc on individual psyches and ambitions. Directors Smriti Khurana and Smriti Mundhra (the latter better-known for the 2020 Netflix original series 'Indian Matchmaking') dive deep into the social and economic factors that drive the marriages of modern India.
