Hot take: Daha

Writer: AmrutaAmruta

'More' [Original title: 'Daha'] is a powerful film about an abusive father-son relationship against the backdrop of the Syrian refugee crisis. The setting is beautiful, but the circumstances as we all know from the news, very bleak. The smuggling of refugees to Greece is a dangerous but profitable enterprise, and the father in the film does it only for money.

The director's sure hand steers us carefully through the rising tension, starting with scenes and moments of magnetic beauty to increasing violence. The loss of innocence and the contagious and pervasive cycle of violence are credibly displayed. Great acting performances and sharp editing help bring together this gritty film, which falters only a little towards the climax. Hard to believe this was a directorial debut. Take a bow, Onur Saylak.
