'Leviathan' ('Leviafan') combines a scathing critique of religion and the state in contemporary Russia with a compelling visual landscape that is as spare as it is stunning. Hypnotic and moody, the film's lofty allegorical ambitions do not shroud the real human concerns but instead put them into stark relief. Pitch-perfect performances and sweeping cinematography lift the film above its own desolation, suggesting that nature's infinite vastness is both a measure of human smallness as well as human hope.
