'Montparnasse Bienvenue' [Original title: 'Jeune Femme'] is a wonderful little film about a young woman having to navigate the streets of Paris on her own after being thrown out of the apartment she shares with her photographer boyfriend. Buoyed throughout by the exuberant yet nuanced performance of the lead actress (Laetitita Dosch), the film works as a commentary on the solitude and strangeness of urban life and the decay of commercialism by presenting them through the lens of comedy. A light hand but an empathetic treatment do much to elevate the rather threadbare plot. The play on words in the title is in keeping with the tone of the film - tongue in cheek but not condescending.
